Until relatively recently there was very little interest in vitamin D. Most people only knew that it was contained in milk and that it was good for healthy bones. In the meantime, research has demonstrated that nearly every tissue and cell type in the body has receptors for vitamin D. Yet many people in the Western world have a vitamin D deficiency. SO what are the health benefits of vitamin D supplements? Apart from its importance for the maintenance of healthy bones, it is an immune system booster - possibly providing support against such disorders as the common cold - and reduces the risk in women of developing rheumatoid arthritis. It may also lower the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, help maintain healthy body weight and cognitive function, reduce the symptoms and frequency of asthma attacks, protect from damage from low levels of radiation, and lower the risk of developing cancer or suffering a heart attack. In a study conducted in Finland, where children received 2,000 IU of vitamin D supplements a day during the first year of life and continued to do so for 31 years, their risk of developing type 1 diabetes was reduced by 88%. It is virtually impossible to obtain sufficient vitamin D from the diet, so vitamin D supplements should be taken, especially by those aged 71 and older, as their requirements are higher. Although vitamin D supplements are recommended for people of all ages.
At the same time, the body also needs vitamin K. While vitamin D facilitates the absorption of calcium into the bloodstream, vitamin K supplements are required to transport calcium from the bloodstream into the bone. It is also required by vitamin K-dependent calcium-binding proteins which are important for blood coagulation and a large number of tissue processes. Vitamin K can be found in small amounts in the diet, but vitamin K supplements are required to provide higher quantities. Vitamins D and K with Sea Iodine™ are health supplements that provide optimal amounts of vitamins D supplement and vitamin K supplement, along with important iodine supplements. For health reasons, many people have reduced their intake of table salt. However, salt was and is for many the principle source of iodine, in which they may now be deficient. Sea Iodine™ is included in this formula to provide iodine without the harmful effects of sodium.
Individuals consuming more than 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D (from diet and supplements) should periodically obtain a serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D measurement. Do not exceed 10,000 IU per day of vitamin D supplement unless recommended by your doctor. Those with high blood calcium levels should not take vitamin D supplements. If you have a thyroid condition or are taking anti-thyroid medication, consult your doctor before supplementing, especially with iodine supplements. If you are taking anti-coagulant or anti-platelet medication, or have a bleeding disorder, consult your doctor before taking this product.
