Huperzine A is a medicinally active phytochemical derived from a particular type of club moss (Huperzia serrata), making it a natural herbal remedy to improve memory naturally. It was first isolated in 1948 by Chinese scientists. Huperzine A inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thus helping to maintain healthy acetylcholine levels - and possibly improving memory naturally and also improve mental function. There have been a number of clinical trials with huperzine A. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 103 people with Alzheimer's disease who received either huperzine A or a placebo twice daily for 8 weeks, approximately 60 % of the huperzine-treated participants showed improvements in memory, thinking, and behavioral functions compared to 36 % of the placebo-treated group. Benefits were also seen in an earlier double-blind trial using injected huperzine in 160 individuals with dementia or other memory disorders. However, as the amount of research is still relatively small, these results need to be substantiated.
