CDP-choline, also known as citicoline, is a psychostimulant/nootropic. These substances have a number of other names such as memory enhancers, neuro enhancers, or cognitive enhancers and improve one or more aspects of mental function such as working memory, motivation and attention. CDP-choline is a highly bioavailable form of choline that is absorbed in the gut, where it is quickly broken down into constituent parts cytidine and free choline. Both compounds then cross the blood-brain barrier directly into the cerebral tissue and work as memory enhancers. Inside the brain, choline is required for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and for cell membrane synthesis.
The importance of choline for adult health has been recognised for some time. In studies carried out on patients with head trauma, CDP-choline accelerated recovery and improved the cognitive and memory disturbances which occur after less severe head trauma.
