Bone is an active and dynamic tissue which is continually being built, broken down and rebuilt during the lifespan of an individual through a process called bone remodelling. Cells known as osteoblasts construct bone matrix and fill it with calcium, and at the same time osteoclasts break down and resorb bone tissue. This fine balance is regulated by a number of factors, including systemic hormones and cytokines.
Bone mass reaches its peak at around the age of 35 and remains constant for about 10 years, during which time bone formation approximately equals bone resorption. As we age, this balance is lost. With the shift in relative hormone levels in midlife – more drastic in women than in men – osteoclast activity becomes considerably greater than osteoblast activity and there is loss of bone mass. Some bone is already being lost by the time women reach the menopause, but the rate of loss can increase up to tenfold during the first five years after the menopause.
Loss of bone density – or osteoporosis – is related not only to calcium deficiency but also to a lack of a number of other nutrients, including magnesium and vitamin D3. Adequate amounts of vitamin D3, zinc, magnesium, manganese and other nutrients are necessary for calcium and phosphorous to be absorbed into the bone matrix. Moreover, not all forms of calcium are equally well absorbed.
While loss of bone mineral density is more common in women, it can also occur in men. Both men and women may suffer from a magnesium deficiency unless they supplement. Bone Restore now contains 300 mg of magnesium – which is not only necessary for calcium and phosphorus to be incorporated into the bone matrix, but also needed for over three hundred different biochemical reactions in the body, providing support for cardiovascular function, energy metabolism and mood.
Life Extension´s Bone Restore with Vitamin K2 healthy bone supplement is a proprietary comprehensive mineral formula designed to help achieve optimum calcium levels and support healthy bone density and bone strength. It provides a measure of 700mg of three different forms of elemental calcium supplement, along with mineral supplements such as magnesium, boron, zinc, silicon, manganese and vitamin D3, which are all of critical importance for maintaining healthy bones.
Bone Restore with Vitamin K2 contains FruiteX B® OsteoBoron®, a calcium/carbohydrate/boron complex, similar to what is found in fruit and vegetables and with a higher bioavailability than boron citrate. A number of studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of boron on bone and joint strength.
Many aging people still experience loss of bone mineral density in spite of the fact that they are supplementing with calcium. This could be due to the fact that the calcium is insufficiently absorbed. Bone Restore contains calcium in capsule form to ensure that it breaks down fully in the digestive tract.
Calcium and other minerals are best not taken with fiber, as fiber can interfere with absorption. There is evidence that calcium from supplements or in dairy foods may inhibit iron absorption, although it has been difficult to distinguish the effects of calcium from those of other inhibitory factors such as phytate, the storage form of phosphorus in many plant tissues. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting that the inhibitory effects of calcium on iron are of only short duration and that the body has adaptive mechanisms.
Calcium supplements are best taken with meals. They should also be taken with a full glass of water, juice or other liquid to increase absorbability. If supplements containing calcium are taken only once a day, it may be best to best to take them in the evening.
There is a large amount of clinical data which shows that vitamin K supplements plays a vital role in maintaining healthy bone density by facilitating the transport of calcium from the bloodstream into the bone. Vitamin K supplements are also required by calcium-regulating proteins in the arteries. Vitamin K deficiency lead to an increase in the amount of circulating undercarboxylated osteocalcin, which is associated with increased bone loss in post-menopausal women, known as post-menopausal osteoporosis.
Vitamin K2 foods (menaquinones) include meat, eggs and dairy products and is also manufactured by bacteria in the human gut, providing some of the body´s vitamin K requirements. Vitamin K2 is up to ten times more bioavailable than vitamin K1 and remains biologically active in the body much longer. Vitamin K1 is removed from the body liver within eight hours, whereas measurable levels of vitamin K2 supplements(MK-7) have been detected 72 hours after ingestion. In recent years there has been a considerable amount of research into two forms of vitamin K2 which has shown them to have greatly improved effects compared to K1. The MK-7 form of K2 remains bioavailable over 24 hours, while consecutive intake has been shown to increase serum levels seven- to eightfold.
As a result, Bone Restore is now available as Bone Restore with vitamin K2 (MK -7) for those not obtaining their vitamin K from Super Booster or Super K.
Bone Restore with vitamin K2 bone supplements can be ordered online. Prompt delivery assured.
