Until relatively recently there was very little interest in vitamin D. Most people only knew that it was contained in milk and that it was good for healthy bones. In the meantime, research has demonstrated that nearly every tissue and cell type in the body has receptors for vitamin D. Yet many people in the Western world have a vitamin D deficiency. SO what are the health benefits of vitamin D supplements? Apart from its importance for the maintenance of healthy bones, it is an immune system booster - possibly providing support against such disorders as the common cold - and reduces the risk in women of developing rheumatoid arthritis. It may also lower the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, help maintain healthy body weight and cognitive function, reduce the symptoms and frequency of asthma attacks, protect from damage from low levels of radiation, and lower the risk of developing cancer or suffering a heart attack. In a study conducted in Finland, where children received 2,000 IU of vitamin D supplements a day during the first year of life and continued to do so for 31 years, their risk of developing type 1 diabetes was reduced by 88%. While vitamin D facilitates the absorption of calcium into the bloodstream, vitamin K supplements are required to transport calcium from the bloodstream into the bone. Vitamin K can be found in small amounts in the diet, but vitamin K supplements are required to provide higher quantities.
