The body needs fatty acids to survive and can make all but two of them; linoleic acid (LA), in the omega-6 family and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in the omega-3 family. These must be supplied by the diet through food or essential fatty acid supplements and are thus considered essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in cold water fish and fish oil supplements, and in perilla and flaxseed oils. Omega-3 oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are usually lacking in the Western diet, whereas large amounts of food are eaten which contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. Although EPA and DHA can be synthesised in the body from alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), synthesis may be insufficient under certain conditions and with a typical Western diet and so essential fatty acid supplements are required.

Omega-3 to omega-6 ratios

Most people in the Western world generally consume far too many omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and too few omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Some Western diets contain 20 parts of omega-6 fatty acids to only one of omega-3 fatty acids, whereas the ideal ratio would be between 1:1 and 4:1. To restore this balance, a change in diet habits and supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can be taken.

Mediterranean diet and longevity

Numerous studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet, which contains large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids such as those in olive oil, fruits rich in antioxidants, vegetables and herbs, is associated with cardiovascular health and those eating a Mediterranean diet live longer. There is also a considerable amount of research demonstrating the benefits of omega-3 on cardiovascular health.

Life Extension´s Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA with Sesame Lignans & Olive Fruit Extract are essential fatty acid supplements containing premium fish oil concentrate derived from sustainable sources with a wide range of nutrients, which work synergistically to provide benefits to cardiovascular health.

The Pure+™ fish oil supplement in Super Omega-3 supplement is produced using a special technology which purifies the oil in a sophisticated distillation process, which reduces environmental pollutants to extremely low levels.

The stability of fatty acids depends on the absence of peroxidation. Sesame lignin supplements help to protect against lipid peroxidation, thus extending the stability and increasing the efficacy of DHA in the body. Sesame lignin supplements also direct fatty acids towards pathways which can help with inflammatory response, working as a natural anti-inflammatory.

There is a large body of research substantiating the wide range of health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, as contained in fish oils, and the monounsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols in olives.

In order to provide the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, Super Omega-3 supplements also deliver a high concentration of olive fruit extract standardised for hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, verbascoside and oleuropein polyphenols. Hydroxytyrosol is believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants. Its oxygen radical absorbance is ten times higher than that of green tea and twice as high as that of CoQ10. Oleuropein has been shown to favourably alter gene expression, delay senescence in specialised skin cells and help maintain normal platelet activation. Research has demonstrated that a combination of fish oil and olive oil supplements is more effective at countering inflammation than a placebo or fish oil alone. Other studies have suggested that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

The enteric coating of the EFA supplement softgels prevents them being dissolved by stomach acid, so that the active ingredients are only released when they reach the alkaline environment of the small intestine. Thus they are ideal for those with sensitive stomachs.

Caution/EFA Supplement Interactions

If you are taking anticoagulant or anti-platelet medication, or have a bleeding disorder, consult your doctor before taking this essential fatty acid supplement.
