Bone is an active and dynamic tissue which is continually being built, broken down and rebuilt during the lifespan of an individual through a process called bone remodelling. Cells known as osteoblasts construct bone matrix and fill it with calcium, and at the same time osteoclasts break down and resorb bone tissue. This fine balance is regulated by a number of factors, including systemic hormones and cytokines.
Bone mass reaches its peak at around the age of 35 and remains constant for about 10 years, during which time bone formation approximately equals bone resorption. As we age, this balance is lost. With the shift in relative hormone levels in midlife – more drastic in women than in men – osteoclast activity becomes considerably greater than osteoblast activity and there is loss of bone mass. Some bone is already being lost by the time women reach the menopause, but the rate of loss can increase up to tenfold during the first five years after the menopause.
Loss of bone density – or osteoporosis – is related not only to calcium deficiency but also to a lack of a number of other nutrients, including magnesium and vitamin D3. Adequate amounts of vitamin D3, zinc, magnesium, manganese and other nutrients are necessary for calcium and phosphorous to be absorbed into the bone matrix. Moreover, not all forms of calcium are equally well absorbed.
While loss of bone mineral density is more common in women, it can also occur in men. Both men and women may suffer from a magnesium deficiency unless they supplement. Vitamin K deficiency lead to an increase in the amount of circulating undercarboxylated osteocalcin, which is associated with increased bone loss in post-menopausal women, known as post-menopausal osteoporosis.
Vitamin K2 foods (menaquinones) include meat, eggs and dairy products and is also manufactured by bacteria in the human gut, providing some of the body´s vitamin K requirements. Vitamin K2 is up to ten times more bioavailable than vitamin K1 and remains biologically active in the body much longer. Vitamin K1 is removed from the body liver within eight hours, whereas measurable levels of vitamin K2 supplements(MK-7) have been detected 72 hours after ingestion. In recent years there has been a considerable amount of research into two forms of vitamin K2 which has shown them to have greatly improved effects compared to K1. The MK-7 form of K2 remains bioavailable over 24 hours, while consecutive intake has been shown to increase serum levels seven- to eightfold.
